During a Power Outage, How Long Will Powerwall Last?
Each Powerwall provides 13.5 kWh of usable energy for backup power.
You can monitor your usage in the Tesla app to help conserve power and extend backup coverage for a day or more, depending on your consumption.
How Quickly Does Powerwall Restore Power?
Powerwall detects an outage, disconnects from the grid, and restores power to your home within a fraction of a second.
Unlike traditional backup generators, Powerwall keeps your appliances running without interruption — in most cases, you won’t even notice the power went out.
How Do I Know If I’m Using Backup Power?
The transition to backup power is seamless, so you may not realise you’re running on Powerwall.
The Tesla app provides notifications whenever Powerwall disconnects from or reconnects to the grid.
When the grid is unavailable, the app will show your home as being powered by Powerwall.
During an outage, consider lowering your consumption to extend available backup time.
How Do I Configure Grid Outage Notifications?
- Ensure your Tesla app is up to date.
- Open the app and go to Settings → Notifications.
- Set your preferences for receiving Power Outage notifications.
- Confirm your phone allows notifications from the Tesla app.
You’ll receive one notification when a sustained outage begins, and another when grid power is restored.
How Can I Extend Powerwall Backup Time?
To maximise runtime during an outage:
- Limit use of non-essential appliances.
- Avoid energy-hungry devices like air conditioners, plasma TVs, hairdryers, or hot tubs.
- Monitor usage in the Tesla app to stay within capacity.
What Happens If I Overload the Backup System?
If your home exceeds the Powerwall’s power (A power bar will appear during a powercut) or energy (13.5 kWh each) capacity, the system will shut down safely, similar to a circuit breaker.
To restart:
- Turn off all lights and appliances.
- Toggle the on/off switch on the side of the Powerwall
- If the battery is fully depleted, wait until the next sunny day before switching it back on.
What Type of Backup Does Powerwall Support?
Powerwall reacts to grid outages more than 100 times faster than typical standby generators, automatically disconnecting from the grid and keeping your home powered without any delay.
